The most definitive study yet shows conclusively that the Mediterranean diet—including olive oil and nuts, wine, and fish—is good for your health. The five-year study, recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed that people on this diet were 30% less likely to develop cardiovascular disease than those on a general lowfat diet.
The researchers who led the study “randomly assigned people to follow one of three diets: 1) a Mediterranean diet supplemented with olive oil, 2) a Mediterranean diet supplemented with nuts, or 3) a low-fat diet, including bread, potatoes and pasta.” The more than 7,400 participants were allowed to eat as much as they wanted. No one was required to diet or exercise. But when people ate a Mediterranean diet rich in fresh vegetables and olive oil they had fewer strokes and heart attacks.
This study confirms the findings of many previous studies and shows that one of the most healthful diets for humans is also the best tasting. Humans have been eating a diet rich in vegetables and fruits for a long time. No wonder fresh vegetables and fruits taste so good..
